Workaround

Important

Follow the steps in this section carefully. Serious problems might occur if you modify the registry incorrectly. Before you modify it, back up the registry for restoration in case problems occur.

To work around this issue, follow these steps:

Loading
  1. Exit all Office 2016 applications.

  2. Start Registry Editor. To do this, use one of the following procedures, as appropriate for your version of Windows.

    • Windows 10, Windows 8.1 and Windows 8:Press Windows Key + R to open a Run dialog box. Type regedit.exe and then press OK.
    • Windows 7: Click Start, type regedit.exe in the search box, and then press Enter.
  3. Locate and then select the following registry key:

    HKEY_CURRENT_USERSoftwareMicrosoftOffice16.0CommonGeneral

  4. Locate the ShownFirstRunOptin registry value in the key that is specified in step 3. If you do not find ShownFirstRunOptin, go to step 5. If you do find it, go to step 7.

  5. If you do not find the ShownFirstRunOptin registry value, point to New on the Edit menu, and then click DWORD (32-bit) Value.

  6. Type ShownFirstRunOptin, and then press ENTER.

  7. Right-click ShownFirstRunOptin, and then click Modify.

  8. In the Value data box, type 1, and then click OK.

  9. On the File menu, click Exit to exit Registry Editor.

You could have a setting or an app that is causing a conflict. I had a setting in General>Accessibility>Button Shapes>On that was wreaking havoc in the Apple iWorks apps. Every time I would try to access help in Pages, Numbers or Keynote, te apps would crash. Astounding when I think about it since the Settings app ... part of the iOS which is Apple engineered/designed and the iWorks apps are also Apple engineered/designed apps. Apple didn't even make sure that its own apps played nice with settings that it created in iOS.

I would try closing all apps, delete OneNote, reset the iPad and download the app again.

In order to close apps, you have to drag the app up from the multitasking display. Double tap the home button and you will see apps lined up going left to right across the screen. Swipe to get to the app that you want to close and then swipe 'up' on the app preview thumbnail to close it.

In order to delete an app, hold down on the app icon until all icons on the screen wiggle. Tap the X on the corner of the icon to delete it. Tap the home button and the icons will quit shaking.

Now, reset the iPad. No data is lost when you do this. Reset the iPad by holding down on the sleep and home buttons at the same time for about 10-15 seconds until the Apple Logo appears - ignore the red slider if it appears on the screen - let go of the buttons. Let the iPad start up.

Go back to the app store and either search for the app again or find it in the purchased tab of the app store on your iPad and download it again. You will not be charged to download it again.
